Artist Statement
My works explore color, composition, and light. I am interested in the way light, both direct and diffused, shows off color relationships of objects. My paintings are also formal studies of the organization of shapes, line, and colors within a composition. The images are from my life--my studio, neighborhood, travel, and imagination. The compositions encourage the viewer to enter another place: to walk down a street, explore a landscape, enter a room, or gaze out a window.
I have worked with soft pastels for years and recently made the switch to acrylic paint. I find I am able to apply some of the techniques I used with pastels, such as layering and blending colors to the acrylic paintings. I love the rich, bright hues of acrylics. The paints are durable, but dry quickly and allow for ease of use and flexibility of technique.
When I begin a piece, I typically have an idea of how the piece might turn out. But as I start to add color to the composition, often my imagination takes over. The colors unfold and the painting takes on a life of its own. This is the part of the creative process I find most exciting.
All acrylic paintings are on canvas, gallery wrapped, with images continuing on the sides of the piece, sealed, and ready to hang. All works on paper are unframed.
